HENRYKING'S DIARY 1 900 Vesper, NewYork Jan. 1 - Friday Itook 14bushel wheat toTully to Will Long at $1.00. I went with the little sleigh and went around by the lake, it was better sleighing. I wentto Dr.Steadman &had my ear cleaned out again. I paid him $1.00. Jan. 2 - Saturday Leonand I got wood all day, it was a nice day. Rose went down to Maties in the afternoon & in the evening she went up to Fred King's. Jan. 3 — Sunday Leon and I got the bobs out to draw down limb wood. There is not much sleighing in the road. Leonrode down to school with Fred & Eva atnight. At night went up to Phil Kennedy's to see about riding to the city with him. Jan. 4 - Monday I went to the city with Phil Kennedy on a 40bushel load potatoes on a wagon. I took my violin out to have the neck re-set. It cost $3.00 and .75 centsto repare (repair) the bow. We wentthrough Christian Hollow, it wassome muddy but icy up here on the hills. It was warm and nice all day. Wind in south. He got .80 cents for potatoes at Mohns. Jan. 5 — Tuesday Roseand Itook one of Maties hams down to her that Ihad been smoking. Jan. 6 - Wednesday Idrove Maude toTully on the cart & had my ear looked atby Dr.Steadman. I paid him .50 cents more. Thatmakes $1.50 I have paid him. I commenced keeping Maude in the barn. I went up and got my grist to Fred Kings. A brakeman got killed at Tully this morning on the milk train, Jim Conover. Jan. 7 - Thursday It was awful cold, 8 degrees above zero. Inthe afternoon Rose& Itook Maties hams down to her &traded roosters with Will. Rose & I went down to Mikes in the evening. John Kennedy called here. Jan. 8 - Friday It was 2above zero this morning. I paid Norman Van Antwerp $1.00 for my share of the seed buckwheat. Jan.10 — Sunday Leon went to church atnight. He went toTully a foot. It was nice walking, froze up and smooth. Jan. 11 - Monday Idrove Maude toTully on the old buggy. Roserode down to Maties &washed for her. I got my blue rappers off Crofoot — Number 46 — give .50 cents a piece. I paid Dr. Steadman .50 cents more on my ear, that makes $2.00 Ihave paid him in all on my ear. Jan. 14 - Thursday The south wind blew awful hard & the snow flew. I only done the chores. Jan.15 — Friday I paid Jamie Pierce $5.50 for my last year phosphate &$1.50 on the year before which made$5.50 in all. I went to the woods for the first time with Maude & Billy on the bobs & got a load of limb wood. Jan. 16, - Saturday Itis down to zero this morning. Leon& Isawed some wood at the door. It was a awful cold wind. Rose, Leon & Itrimed (trimmed) some cabbage in the aftemoon. Itis at $30.00 per ton.Mag & Willie was up here in the evening. Mike has got a nervous spell. Jan. 17 — Sunday Itsnowed last night & today so the snow is quite deep, a foot or more. We all stayed at home. Jan.20 - Wednesday Itook 1040 cabbage toTully on thebobs to Dewey & Slayton at $30.00 per ton. It was a nice day & goodsleighing. Inthe evening Rose& Ifinished trimming the rest of the cabbage. Jan.21 - Thursday Rose& Itook the last of our cabbage 740 toTully. They dropped it today to $28.00 per ton. Idrove Billy & Maude on the bobs. It was a nice day. Jan. 24 — Sunday It was a warm day. Iworked at the ditch down by the watertrough & took our hams &shoulders out of the brine. Leon went back to school atnight a foot. It was muddy. Jan.25 - Monday I took Leon's victuals toTully with Maude & the old buggy & got a thermometer, gave .20 cents. Isold some snow apples for .50 cents a bushel. Ipaid Cherbourg $2.80 on account in full up to date. Feb. 11 - Thursday Itsnowed & blowed all day. I did not do anything only the chores. Leon come home atnight. School does notkeep Lincoln's birthday tomorrow. Feb. 12 - Friday Itis a nice day. Leon & Idrawed 8basswood logs up to Fred King's saw mill. I sold them to Bert Billings for$18.00 per thousand scale measure to pay for new rims & tire on my lumber wagon. There was little bare ground. Feb. 13 - Saturday Idrawed 1875of coal for Jack Flanagan. It was nice wheeling in the afternoon. Leon and I sawed some at the door. In the evening Rose & I went up to Fred Kings. Eva was home. Willie Sheridan was up to see Leon. Feb. 14 - Sunday Leonrode down toTully with Fred when he took Eva to the train. Itrained & froze on & was awful slippery. Mike come up here in the evening. It was nice wheeling. Feb. 17 - Wednesday Thewind blew hard & cold.There is a awful hard crust. The horses can hardly stand up on it. Leon come homefrom school &skated on the crust out in the south lot. GeorgeMurphy tipped over with a load of phosphate on the crust up in Mike's lot. Phill & I & Mike, Pat Aungier, Hub Ranior & Willie Bammesberger went up & helped him. Feb. 18 - Thursday Idrawed a little load of straw down to Matie on the bobs. Rose& Idrove Maude up to Nelson Rice's &called on Eva.At night we went down to Maties and Itook my violin & played some. Jim Tuttle & Henry Middleton was there. Feb. 19 - Friday The south wind bloes awful hard & it thawed. Idrove Jennie & Bess on the bobs. I went up just before night & see Fred King. Sawhe startedhis saw mill. Leon came home a foot. Feb. 20 - Saturday Itis cold &awful foggy. Leon went up to Seth Longs tobuy his bicicle (bicycle). Wesawed little wood at the door. Feb. 23 - Tuesday The south wind blew hard. It rained all the afternoon. Rose& I weighed Nero. He weighed 54 lbs. I got him of Glen Gardner. He is l1/2 year old. Cabbage is $35.00 & $37.00 per ton. Mike was up here in the evening &Said he heard cabbage was $40.00. Feb. 24 - Wednesday It rained, the south wind blew hard. At night I went down after Mike to come up. The 3 year old heifer I got of him when a calf had a red & white heifer calf just like old Molly. Feb.27 - Saturday Leon & I went to the woods & cut down some trees & brought down a draugh. Feb. 28 - Sunday Leon went up to Seth Longs & bought his bicycle & brought it home. There was some snow. At night he went toTully a foot. Mar. 7 - Sunday We all stayed at home. Leon& Willie Sheridan skated down on the creek. Leon went toTully atnight a foot. Matie was up here in the afternoon & stayed to supper. Mar.8 — Monday Idrove the colts to Tully & got a grist of 400lbs. There was some bare ground. It was the first time Jennie was ever at Tully. She is 4 years old & Maude is 5 this spring. It was a nice day. John Murphy finished setting his telephone poles. Rose& I went down to Mike's inthe evening. Icarried them down a pint of milk. Mar.9 - Tuesday Phill Kennedy put up his telephone poles. Itrained & froze on. Mar.10 - Wednesday It was all kinds of weather. BertAbbott &Ruth Bishop was married. Itthawed & sun shone &rained &wind blew & was black in the west &then it was still & pleasant & colder &then lighter. At night the wind blew hard &snowed. Mar. 11 - Thursday Itsnowed & blowed. Mrs. Nora McAvoy was buried. It was a cold wind all day. Idrove Bess on the buggy down to Maties just atnight &took some clothes Rosehad washed for her. Mar. 12 — Friday I went up to the woods and got a draught. William Munson&his wife Sarah Edinger called here. It was a nice day. Mar. 13 - Saturday Leon& I went to the woods just before night. It snowed inthe evening. We went over to France& Mikes. Folks went up. Mar. 14 - Sunday Will come up to look to his traps. Jim come up with him. Leon went back to Tully a foot. Mar.31 — Wednesday The Caugher cow had a white heifer calf. Mike come up &said the cow was down in the lot & trying to come in so he & Idrove her into the barn. It was a nice day but cold wind. Idrawed too(two) draugh from the woods with the old team. April 1 - Thursday Itis a nice day. I went down toVesper with the colts &little sleigh & got my lumber wagon wheels. Ihad new felleys ('2) &tire. It was most all bare ground. I washed my bobs. April 2 - Friday I put my bobs away for the summer. Mike & Mag & Willie was up here in the evening. April 3 - Saturday The Blacksmith Shop of Sallisbery burnt up. Tully Hose House came very near burning last night. Leon& I sawed & split wood at the door all day & piled up some. I got a letterfrom Frank with a check in itfor $15.00. April 4 - Sunday It spit snow. Joe Laning was burried (buried) atVesper. Matie come a foot up here & got Rose hat to wear to the funeral. Iwent. April 5 - Monday Was a nice morning but looked stormy. Leon & I cut draughs & drawed down in the pasture with the old team. Inthe evening Rose, Leon,Matie, Will, Mabel Middleton & I went over to France Ryan's & had some music. Olive Tuttle had a babygirl. April 8 — Thursday Itool Leon to Tully. He went to Syracuse to have his picture taken. April 9 - Friday The snow is 3 or 4 inches deep & perfectly still at 5:30 and now at 7:30 it is snowing & blowing fierce. I went down to get Mike & Will tohelp raise our privy. Mike, Will, Leon & Iraised our privy. Idrawed two 14foot logs & one 8foot log up to Fred King's saw mill with the colts. They went nice. I went up to see Tom Kennedy in the afternoon. He was sick. April 10 - Saturday I was sick with a hard cold. Leon& Idid not do any thing. Matie came up & got some butter. John Murphy was drawing logs with two teams up to Fred King's. It was awful cold wind &it snowed. April 11 - Sunday It was a nice day. Weall stayed at home. Leon wentto Easterservice in the evening. April 14 - Wednesday I went to Tully after my new lines but they was not done. April 15 - Thursday Billy fell on the barn floor &knocked one hip down. Idrawed a load of limb wood with the colts from the woods. Idrawed my lumber home from Fred's on the lumber wagon. The first I have used it since I got the wide tires on. Mr. Towner died. A man come along drunk & lost a bag of feed & liked to run in to my mail box. April 16 - Friday It was a nice morning. I got Fred King's rifle &shot Billy back of the hog pen. I finished drawing down limb wood & then took away the banking. At night Rose, Leon & I & France Ryan's folks went down to Maties and had some music. April 17 - Saturday TheHollistene (Holstein) cow had a heifer calf from my bull. Itrained It was a dam fool but guess I will raise it. Leon & I dug a hole over cross the creek &buried Billy. We drawed him over on the sleigh with the colts. Leon helped Francis Ryan pile up lumber for Fred King in the afternoon. April 18 - Sunday Sun shone &then it clouded up & thundered &rained. Leon got his pictures from the city. Grant Billings brought them in for him. Itfroze last night & spit a few flakes of snow this morning. April 25 - Sunday I went over to Lon Wasmer to see Bess. Hehas had her since Monday. He paid me $2.00 towards her work. May 2 - Sunday Itis a nice morning but got cloudy. I took Leondown to Dr. Dwinelle. He said he had some hearttrouble & gave him some medicine. Itsnowed by spells today but melted. May 3 - Monday I took Leon to school. I got 400 of bran & homina (hominy) & some grass seed to seed 7 acres up on the hill. It came to $11.56 & the feed $6.20. Ipaid $3.20 on the feed. May 4 - Tuesday I went up to the swamp & got some cowslips & finished taking the banking away. May 5 - Wednesday Idrawed the oats up on theside hill for Murphy. Hecommenced to sow this morning. May 6 - Thursday Ichurned &then Itook 11bushel oats & 2 1/2 grass seed up around the road up to Murphy's for him to sow on the hill. He commenced to sow & broke a casting to his grass seeder. Icleaned out the privy & then went over to Glen Bishop's after a grass seed sower but it was broke. I stopped to Lon Wasmer to see Bess. Lon paid me $2.00 more for Besswork (Bess is a horse). Itthundered &rained in the night. May 7 - Friday I went over to Earl Atkins & got his grass seed sower & then Rose & I set out 3 plumb (plum) trees in the garden. Itrained inthe afternoon. Leon come home a foot at night. I set a hen under the barn. May 12 - Wednesday I went up to Will Neuman's & got a ton of hay. Frank Witherill helped me. I give $11.00. In the afternoon Rose & I went down to Maties & Iplowed her a garden. It was a nice day. May 13 - Thursday Ifinished sowing the grass seed up on the hill. Rose went up too &then I dragged in the orchard. Rose & I went down to Mikes in the evening. May 14 - Friday Pres Van Antwerp sowed my oats over on theside hill & I dragged them in with the colts. Leon come home a foot May 15 - Saturday Leon& I trimed (trimmed) out a limb & burnt some brush in the orchard in the forenoon. Lon Wasmer brought Besshome & paid me $1.75 more. Thatmade $5.75 in all. Leon wentfishing in the afternoon. May 16 - Sunday Rose & I went to Vet Morse wife's funeral atVesper. It rained in the morning but in the afternoon it cleared off & was warm & nice. In the afternoon I killed 2 hogs for Wright King. Leonhad a tire on his bicycle stole. It was in George Gardner's barn. They thought will Gardner stole it. May 21 - Friday Icommenced toplow over west on the quack piece for potatoes. Inthe afternoon I went & plowed for Fred King 2hours & 45minutes to pay for Pres sowing my oats. Leon come home on his wheels. Rose & Leon went down to Bert Billings in the evening. May 22 - Saturday Leon& Idrawed manure. Wedrawed 20 loads atnight. Leontook Bess& the old buggy &he &Willie Sheridan went toTully to a moving picture show. May 23 - Sunday Leon went down to Fred Hollenbeck's on his wheel & then come home & put on his new suit for the first time & went to church. At night he went toTully on his wheels. May 24 - Monday Rose & Itook Leon'sVictuals to Tully. Mike & Mag was down too. I got a sack of flour at Mrs. Towner's. Give$1.80. We had a frost last night. I churned 18 lbs butter inthe afternoon. At night Itook a jar butter down to Earl Morse at .28 cents. May 25 - Tuesday I plowed for potatoes over west. At night Rose & I went up to Otisco. I bought two milk cans of Harry Tuffley. I give $2.75 a piece. May 26 - Wednesday I went toTully & got a shoe to my side hill plow. Give .85 cents for it. May 27 - Thursday I plowed for potatoes over west. It rained & at night it thundered & lightened & rained hard. May 28 - Friday Ifinished plowing for potatoes over west. Itrained. Icommenced to plow for barley back of the cow barn.
